General Breed Information

The Karelo-Finnish Laika is considered the smallest Laika of Russia. Dogs of this breed have commonly been used as hunting dogs by peasants in Poland, Finland, Karelia, and northwestern Russia since the olden times. In Russia, the major centers of formation of this breed were Moscow, Leningrad, and Petrozavodsk. Between 1930 and 1940, a government kennel, together with some local hunters, tried to increase the number of these dogs. Many Karelo-Finnish Laikas were lost during the Second World War, but breeding programs have kept this breed alive.

The height of Karelo-Finnish Laikas range from 15 to 19 inches and their weight falls between 25 and 35 pounds. The body of these dogs is medium-sized and square. These dogs have a skull that isn't broad between the ears. Their eyes are circular and they have triangular ears that are carried erect. The muzzle of these dogs are medium-sized and well-proportioned to their head. These dogs have a black nose, and their teeth meet in either a level or scissors bite. The neck of these dogs appears thick, and they have an oval and deep chest. They have powerful legs and compact, strong feet. The tail of these dogs is bushy and their coat is thick and fairly short. The coat of these dogs come in different shades of fawn.
